After refusing to pay an unjustified rate, an Ola driver intimidated and mistreated a resident of Gurugram last week. The woman was on her way to the airport when the event happened early on Friday morning.
An Ola driver harassed and intimidated a woman in Gurugram, stealing a video without permission, demanding payment via QR code before the journey was over, and threatening to harm her when she attempted to hail another vehicle.
The driver asked to pause the ride after just ten minutes so he could replenish his water bottles. I nodded, but he immediately threatened to have me pay using a QR code he showed before the car would start. In a long LinkedIn post, Puja Singh wrote, “I asked him to end the ride first so I could confirm the amount, but instead, he insisted that I pay first, threatening not to let me leave until I did so.”
Ultimately, her first Ola driver stayed by and continued to threaten and insult her, forcing her to find another one on the way to the airport. According to the social media post, the cab driver started acting “increasingly aggressively” and threatening people while concentrating on her phone.
“Intimidated and unsafe,” Singh recalls feeling as the man threatened to “come back at night and show you what happens.” While she waited for the replacement ride, he kept screaming and even recorded her without her permission (refusing to remove it).
He also lifted his hand as if to smack me throughout this ten to fifteen minute harassing session, threatening to “hit you so hard.” Despite my shaking, I warned him that there would be dire repercussions if he attempted to touch me. She described the incident on social media, saying, “His response was to laugh and keep on with his verbal abuse.”
It was not immediately apparent if Ola had acknowledged the problem or been in touch with the unhappy client. On social media, the event drew harsh criticism, with many calling on the firm to pay attention. Some others reported comparable unsettling experiences they have had with ride-hailing services.
